May the sunshine be upon us!

Summer is here, the gardening season is in full swing and there is no better time to get out in the great outdoors and enjoy your garden.

Here are our top tips on what to be doing in your garden this month;

  • It is time to sow French Beans, Runner Beans and Sweetcorn
  • Plant out Courgettes and Leeks
  • You can harvest Asparagus, Spring Cabbage and Salad leaves now
  • Still keep an eye out for night time temperatures, Jack Frost can still pay a visit this month
  • Mow the lawn
  • Check watering daily
  • Ventilate greenhouses
  • Lift and divide spring flowering bulbs
  • Prune back any spring flowering shrubs that have finished flowering
  • Select your summer annuals for your hanging baskets and pots.

May is a perfect time to plant up your hanging baskets, borders and pots ready for some stunning summer colour. Why not go for a colour theme? Purples, blues and whites are a popular theme, as are yellows and blues. A mixture of colours always looks spectacular too! Try adding unusual tones such as the almost black Surfinia and Million Bells, these will make the other colours in your arrangements really stand out.

Give your plants the very best start when planting this month. Ever tried Mycorrhizal Fungi? It is a beneficial fungi that grows in association with the plants roots to give the very best start to the plants life cycle. It will increase the growth of the root system and is incomparable compared to some other feeds. It is so successful, you can even use it to re-plant roses where they have previously been grown before!

Black Pearl
Pretty Pistachio

New and Exciting for this Month

For those Heucheraholics out there, keep a look out for the new ‘Black Pearl’. As dark as the name suggests, this is a truly striking Heuchera, bearing the deepest of purple leaves. This variety will go perfectly against lime green varieties such as ‘Lime Ricky’ and ‘Lime Ruffles’.

Another Heuchera to look for this month is ‘Pretty Pistachio’. Delicate coral bells, sit above vibrant apple-green leaves. A must have for the green Heuchera lover!

Look out for these new varieties in your local garden centre today!

Make the most of your garden this month, not only doing the practical gardening tasks, but actually enjoying the efforts of your labours too! Invite friends round for a BBQ or two, or sit and enjoy a glass of wine.
